Best Cruise Private Islands: All the Major Ones, Ranked (2026)

Cruise line private islands range from serene crescent beaches to full-blown water-park destinations. After visiting them all, here's how the major ones actually stack up — and which is right for your trip.

A private island day is, for many cruisers, the single best day of the whole sailing. But "private island" covers everything from a serene two-mile crescent of empty sand to a 135-foot waterslide with a queue. The right one for you depends entirely on what you want out of a beach day.

We've visited every major cruise line private island in the Caribbean and Bahamas — paying our own way — and below is our honest ranking, plus exactly who each island suits. Use our interactive comparison tool to filter by cruise line, amenities or activity type.

No single island is 'the best' for everyone. A couple wanting a quiet, scenic day and a family chasing waterslides should pick completely different islands — so we've flagged the ideal traveler for each.

1. Half Moon Cay — best beach, full stop

Shared by Holland America and Carnival, Half Moon Cay wins 'best private island' polls almost every year, and it deserves to. The two-mile crescent of powder-soft sand and shallow, glass-clear water is arguably the most beautiful beach in cruising. There are no waterslides — just a perfect beach, a horseback-into-the-sea ride and a famously good BBQ. The only catch: it requires tendering, so rough seas occasionally cancel the call.

2. Castaway Cay — best all-rounder and best service

Disney's original island is the most consistently loved in the industry. It's masterfully organized, almost everything is included, and the adults-only Serenity Bay gives couples a genuine escape while kids hit Pelican Plunge. If you value flawless service and a low-stress, largely-included day, nothing beats it — though Disney sailings are premium-priced and cabanas are nearly impossible to book.

3. Perfect Day at CocoCay — best for thrills and big groups

Royal Caribbean's blockbuster is the benchmark for amenities: the tallest waterslide in North America, a giant wave pool, an over-water cabana club and an adults-only beach club, plus genuinely good free beaches and the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean. It can feel like a theme park, and the best bits are pricey add-ons, but no island offers more range for a mixed-age group.

4. Ocean Cay — best for couples and calm

MSC's reclaimed-sand-island-turned-marine-reserve is the most grown-up option, with eight beaches, a serious spa and a magical evening lighthouse show on overnight stays. Pick it if you want scenery and calm over slides and queues.

5. Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point — most beautiful new island

Disney's 2024 Eleuthera island is an eco-conscious, culturally rich design built with Bahamian artists — quieter than Castaway Cay and genuinely special. A top pick if you want Disney polish with more space and meaning.

6. Celebration Key — newest and most modern

Carnival's 2025 Grand Bahama mega-destination brings five themed 'portals,' the largest lagoon in the Caribbean and an adults-only Pearl Cove club. As a brand-new build it's modern and dock-served, with the usual opening-phase growing pains.

7. Labadee — most dramatic scenery

Royal Caribbean's mountain-backed Haiti peninsula is the most scenic of the lot, home to the world's longest over-water zip line. Varied and beautiful, with the caveat that itineraries can occasionally be affected by conditions in Haiti.

8. Great Stirrup Cay — historic and improving

The industry's original private island (1977) is NCL's relaxed Bahamian beach day, lifted by the upscale paid Silver Cove area. Solid rather than spectacular, but steadily upgrading.

9. Harvest Caye — best excursion gateway

NCL's Belize island has a small beach but unbeatable access to mainland adventure: cave tubing, Mayan ruins and the world's second-largest reef. Choose it for the excursions, not the sand.

10. Princess Cays — simplest classic beach day

A no-frills slice of Eleuthera beachfront for swimming, snorkeling and a free BBQ. Pretty and relaxing, if a little dated next to the mega-islands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best cruise line private island?

For a pure beach day, Half Moon Cay (Holland America/Carnival) is the most-awarded. For activities and families, Perfect Day at CocoCay (Royal Caribbean) leads. For service and an included experience, Disney's Castaway Cay is the gold standard. The 'best' depends on whether you want calm, thrills or convenience.

Which private islands don't require tendering?

Most newer islands let the ship dock directly: Ocean Cay, Perfect Day at CocoCay, Castaway Cay, Lookout Cay, Celebration Key, Harvest Caye and Labadee. Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays still tender, so their calls are more weather-dependent.

Are cruise private islands free?

Beach access, loungers and a BBQ lunch are typically included in your fare. Premium experiences — waterparks, cabanas, adults-only clubs, spa treatments and excursions — cost extra and are usually cheapest when pre-booked.
